Church holiday:

Saint Basil the Great

Saint Basil the Great was born around 330 AD in the city of Caesarea Cappadocia (Asia Minor) into a devout Christian family of Basil and Emilia. His father was a lawyer and rhetoric teacher.

Basil received his initial education under the guidance of his parents and his grandmother Macrina, a highly educated Christian. Following the death of his father and grandmother, Basil went to Constantinople for further education and then to Athens, where he mastered various sciences – rhetoric and philosophy, astronomy and mathematics, physics and medicine.

Around 357, Basil returned to Caesarea, where he taught rhetoric for a time. In Antioch, in 362, he was ordained as a deacon by Bishop Meletius, and in 364, he was ordained as a presbyter by Bishop Eusebius of Caesarea.

While fulfilling his ministry, Saint Basil fervently preached and tirelessly cared for the needs of his flock, earning great respect and love.

Shortly thereafter (370), Saint Basil was elected by the Synod of Bishops to the Caesarean see. During a difficult time for the Church, he emerged as a fervent defender of the Orthodox faith, safeguarding it from heresies through his words and letters.

Throughout his short life, Saint Basil left a wealth of theological works for posterity: nine homilies on the Hexaemeron, 16 homilies on various psalms, five books defending the Orthodox teaching on the Holy Trinity; 24 homilies on various theological topics; seven ascetic treatises; monastic rules; a rule for ascetics; two books on Baptism; a book on the Holy Spirit; several sermons and 366 letters to various individuals.

The Feast of Mary, Queen of Peace (Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary)

On January 1, the Catholic Church celebrates a feast dedicated to the Virgin Mary – the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary or the Feast of Mary, Queen of Peace. It concludes the Octave of Christmas and is one of the holidays when attendance at Mass is obligatory. It has been known since the 4th century.

Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, is regarded in Christian tradition as the Mother of God and the greatest of Christian saints.
