Former Estonian President Arnold Rüütel has passed away.

On Tuesday evening, former president Arnold Ruutel passed away in Estonia at the age of 96, according to the press service of the head of state.

On Tuesday evening, former president Arnold Ruutel passed away at the age of 96 in Estonia, as reported by the press service of the head of state.

Ruutel, in his role as chairman of the presidium of the Supreme Council of the Estonian SSR and later as chairman of the Supreme Council of Estonia, was a key figure in the restoration of the republic's independence.

"Under his leadership, a transitional period began in occupied Estonia, the authority of the USSR was deemed illegal, and independence was restored," stated the office of the head of state.

As president of the republic, his goal was the balanced development of Estonia and the initiation of a process for social reconciliation, the press service added.

In 2001, Ruutel was elected president of Estonia. His term ended on October 9, 2006.

Ruutel advocated for Estonia's accession to the European Union and NATO.

President Alar Karis, along with Sirje Karistrau and the presidential administration, extended their heartfelt condolences to the relatives and friends of the former president.
