Instead of free and fair elections in Belarus, citizens face daily violations of human rights, stated German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
"The people of Belarus have had no choice. This is a bitter day for all who yearn for freedom and democracy. Instead of free and fair elections, and a life without fear and arbitrariness, they confront oppression, repression, and human rights violations every day," she wrote.
Baerbock added that over 1,200 individuals in Belarus remain imprisoned solely for having the courage to express their opinions.
"We will not forget them. All political prisoners must be released, and the brutal repression must come to an end. We deeply respect Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and the brave people of Belarus. They demonstrate how vital the struggle for our democracy in Europe is," the publication states.
The German Foreign Minister also noted that for a democratic and free Belarus, the European family keeps its doors open.
