The Lithuanian Foreign Minister, Kęstutis Budrys, emphasized the urgent need to revise navigation rules and combat shadow fleets following yet another incident involving damage to an underwater cable in the Baltic Sea between Latvia and Sweden.
"Today, another case of damage to an underwater cable has been recorded in the Baltic Sea, this time between Latvia and Sweden. Lithuania takes such reports very seriously," he wrote on social media platform X.
Budrys stated that the number of accidents occurring in such a short timeframe makes it difficult to continue believing in the theory of coincidence.
"The navigation rules in the Baltic Sea need to be revised, especially concerning the use of anchors. The shadow fleet is not just an issue of circumventing sanctions. It poses a more serious threat to our environment and critical infrastructure," the minister emphasized.
He also expressed his anticipation for the substantive discussions scheduled for tomorrow in Brussels.
"This situation requires prompt solutions," Budrys stressed.
As reported, on Sunday morning, the underwater fiber optic cable of the Latvian State Radio and Television Centre (LVRTC) was damaged.
