Chancellor of Austria Karl Nehammer announced that he will resign from his position as head of government and chairman of the conservative People's Party after failing to form a coalition government.
"An agreement on important fundamental issues has proven impossible. In the coming days, I will step down as Federal Chancellor and also as leader of the People's Party (ÖVP) and will facilitate an orderly transition. This orderly transition is particularly important to me, as I have always advocated for stability in our country and within the People's Party," - he stated on his social media platform X.
He noted that his party engaged in long and honest negotiations, but it is impossible to reach consensus on key issues with the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ). The politician emphasized that the ÖVP stands by its commitments and therefore will not agree to measures targeting benefits and businesses or any new taxes.
"Thus, we have halted negotiations with the SPÖ and will not be resuming them," he concluded.
