The ceasefire in Ukraine could be monitored by a UN-mandated mission, stated the Chairman of the EU Military Committee, General Robert Brieger, in an interview with Die Welt on Saturday.

"A UN-mandated mission is possible, which would involve not only Europeans but also soldiers from the Global South or, for example, the Caucasus. EU soldiers could undoubtedly make a significant contribution," the publication quotes Brieger.

According to the official, EU states could provide substantial forces for monitoring the demilitarized zone, but such a mission would require an even greater military presence.

When asked about arming the military involved in such a mission, the Chairman of the EU Military Committee responded that it would depend on a political decision, but the mission's mandate must be strong, Die Welt reports.
