A bipartisan group of members from the U.S. House of Representatives, actively supported by the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States, has introduced a resolution in the House recognizing Russia's actions in Ukraine as an act of genocide, reported on January 7th by Ukraine's Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, on Facebook.
"Thank you to the congressmen for introducing this important resolution! All of Russia's crimes must be reflected in American legislation to ensure accountability for Russian criminals and to prevent such horrific acts in the future," Markarova wrote.
This is the first legislative measure concerning Ukraine presented for consideration by the new 119th U.S. Congress. The preamble of the resolution states that the atrocities committed by Russian forces in Ukraine, along with the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians, including children, to Russia and occupied territories meet the criteria outlined in Article II of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. The resolution condemns Russia for committing acts of genocide, calls on the United States, in collaboration with NATO and EU allies, to take measures to support the Ukrainian government to prevent further acts of Russian genocide against the Ukrainian people, and supports tribunals and international criminal investigations to hold Russian political leaders and military personnel accountable.
