U.S. President Donald Trump emphasizes the need to halt the war in Ukraine, whether through a ceasefire or a direct move towards an agreement.
"We are currently working on agreements. And, in particular, the main goal is to stop the war, whether through a ceasefire or a direct deal. I would prefer to move directly to an agreement, but a ceasefire will always happen a bit faster. And every day, you save thousands, or at least hundreds, but in some cases, thousands of lives. So we want to see if we can achieve this very quickly," he stated at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House.
Trump welcomed the efforts of Saudi Arabia, where a recent meeting between the U.S. and Russia took place, noting that "they want this to end, and they are doing everything possible to ensure that it does."
"I think Russia wants it too. I spoke with President Putin, and my people are constantly dealing with him and his team. And they want to do something," Trump remarked.
According to him, one of the first calls he made after his inauguration was to Putin.
