The elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, believes that NATO countries should allocate 5% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for defense.
"It should be 5%, not 2%. But at that time, it was 2%," he stated at a press conference in Mar-a-Lago (Florida) on Tuesday.
Referring to his first presidential term, Trump noted that he had demanded Europe to increase defense spending to 2% of GDP.
“Some were not paying enough, and some were paying nothing at all. This includes Germany, which was only paying 1%,” he remarked.
Trump also added, “If it weren't for me, NATO wouldn't exist today.”
