In the Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Hospital, two unique organ transplantation surgeries were performed, saving the lives of seven individuals from Kyiv, Lviv, and Zaporizhzhia, reported the press service of the Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration.
According to the agency, from February 15 to 25, transplant surgeons at the Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Hospital (ZOKB) conducted two unique multi-organ transplant surgeries using organs from deceased donors for seven patients in urgent need of donor organs.
On February 15, the team of Zaporizhzhia transplant surgeons successfully performed surgeries to transplant hearts, livers, and two kidneys from one deceased donor, who was diagnosed with brain death. His relatives consented to posthumous organ donation in order to save the lives of four individuals.
Then, on February 25, organ retrieval was conducted at the Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Hospital - kidneys and a liver from another deceased donor, which allowed for the saving of three lives. Two patients underwent kidney transplant surgeries in Zaporizhzhia, while one liver was sent to Kyiv for a patient awaiting surgery.
It is also reported that over the past year, ZOKB, which houses the leading transplantation center in Ukraine, has performed 11 kidney transplants and 2 heart transplants.
