The explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck that occurred on Wednesday, January 1, near the Trump Las Vegas hotel in Nevada (USA), which injured bystanders, is being investigated by authorities as a possible act of terrorism, reports ABC News.
According to official information, the driver entered the hotel parking area, and the vehicle exploded. The driver was killed and is currently the only victim of the incident. Authorities stated that seven bystanders sustained minor injuries.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced that they are investigating the fire at the hotel entrance. The public has been advised to avoid the area, although police noted that the fire has been extinguished.
Investigators are unsure of the cause of the explosion. As reported by ABC News, there was a cargo of mortars onboard the Tesla Cybertruck, resembling fireworks. Investigators are urgently working to determine the motive and whether the driver intended to cause the explosion and why.
"While the motive has not been established and other possibilities are not ruled out, the police are treating the explosion as a potential criminal act and a possible act of terrorism. Evidence collection and investigation are ongoing," the statement said.
The White House reported that President Joe Biden has been informed about the fire and explosion near the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas and has instructed his team to provide the necessary assistance.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and a close ally of Trump, stated on Wednesday afternoon that "the entire Tesla executive team is currently investigating this matter."
"It is likely a terrorist act. Both this Cybertruck and the F-150 suicide bomber in New Orleans were rented on Turo. They may be somehow connected," he wrote on social media X.
