Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described it as "illogical" that Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons, pointing out that they should have been exchanged for real security guarantees.

The president noted that he discussed the Budapest Memorandum with U.S. President Donald Trump.

"I believe that this should not have been done to either Ukraine or Europe, honestly. Because Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons. I do not claim that it should have been given up or not. In my opinion, it should not have been, judging by the fact that we were attacked," Zelensky said in an interview with Italian journalist Cecilia Sali, who was released from Iranian captivity on January 8.

The president added that nuclear weapons "should have been exchanged for real security guarantees, and at that time it was only NATO."

"To be honest, even today it is only NATO," he said.
