The application for the transit of Russian natural gas through Ukraine for Wednesday, January 1, 2025, has dropped to zero, witnessed by operational data from "Operator GTS of Ukraine" as of 20:58.
In addition to the zero nomination at the entry point into the Ukrainian system through Sudzha (which was 40.4 million cubic meters on December 31), there is also a zero nomination at the main exit from the GTS of Ukraine at the Uzhgorod/Veliki Kapushany point (which was 35.9 million cubic meters on December 31).
As reported, the agreement between Naftogaz of Ukraine and Gazprom for organizing transportation, the transport agreement between Naftogaz and OGTSU, as well as the inter-operator agreement between OGTSU and Gazprom were signed on December 30, 2019. The contract on a "take or pay" basis provides for the transit of 65 billion cubic meters of gas in 2020, and 40 billion cubic meters of gas per year in 2021-2024.
Representatives of the Ukrainian government have repeatedly stated in 2024 that Ukraine does not intend to sign a transit contract extension with the Russian Federation after its expiration. At the same time, negotiations have been mentioned regarding the supply of Azerbaijani gas to Europe through Russia and Ukraine, although Baku does not have significant free resources.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky put a definitive end to the question of continuing transit in 2025 on December 19 during the EU Summit in Brussels: "We will not engage in extending the transit of Russian gas; we will not allow additional billions to be earned on our blood."
Results of stress tests conducted with the assistance of USAID showed that the GTS and UGS of Ukraine are prepared to operate under zero transit conditions.
The European Commission states that the EU is ready to halt the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory and has alternative routes for the supply of non-Russian gas.
