The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, extended his condolences to U.S. President Joseph Biden regarding the wildfires in California, and they also discussed new sanctions against Russia's energy sector and the situation on the front lines.
"I spoke with Biden. I expressed condolences for the terrible wildfires in California and the loss of life. I noted the heroism of Americans helping to save lives from the flames and stopping the spread of the wildfires," he wrote on Telegram.
Zelensky also thanked for the support of Ukraine, its independence, and the consolidation of the international community. "Together we have created a global coalition of defenders of freedom and the principles of international peace and security," he remarked.
According to the president, the two sides also discussed the details of the new U.S. sanctions package concerning Russian energy, which helps Vladimir Putin finance the war. "It is very important that America has now targeted Russia's shadow tanker fleet and companies like 'Gazprom Neft' and 'Surgutneftegas,' which accumulate funds directly for Putin," Zelensky explained.
As the head of state noted, Putin should feel the cost of his war by losing from his own pockets. Zelensky also expressed gratitude to "America, both parties, and both chambers of Congress, which support the just pressure on Russia for its unprovoked and criminal aggression."
Meanwhile, the situation on the battlefield was also a topic of discussion, emphasizing the need to further strengthen Ukraine's air shield and protect lives in Ukrainian cities and villages from Russian terror—specifically from daily strikes by Russian missiles and drones. "Patriots" in the hands of Ukrainians have proven their effectiveness and must increase this strength," the president wrote.
"We appreciate that President Biden said: preserving and protecting Ukraine's independence is critical for all of Europe and the democratic world. We will surely endure and achieve sustainable peace for our people and our country," the head of the Ukrainian state concluded.
As reported, Biden declared a major disaster in the state of California due to the wildfires. According to the latest data, at least five people have died, and more than 1,000 structures have been destroyed by fires in the Los Angeles area. The fires began on Tuesday and spread rapidly due to strong winds. Evacuation orders have been issued to between 130,000 and 150,000 people in various regions of the state, according to different reports.
