It is known that Saint Gregory, Bishop of Nyssa, was the younger brother of Saint Basil the Great. Gregory was born and raised during the height of the Arian controversies. He received an excellent education and was a rhetoric teacher for a time. In 372, he was consecrated by Saint Basil the Great as the bishop of the city of Nyssa in Cappadocia.
In 381, Saint Gregory was one of the key figures at the Second Ecumenical Council convened in Constantinople against the heresy of Macedonius, who incorrectly taught about the nature of the Holy Spirit. At this council, upon the initiative of Saint Gregory, the Nicene Creed was supplemented.
In 383, Saint Gregory of Nyssa participated in the Council in Constantinople, where he spoke about the divinity of the Son and the Holy Spirit. In 386, he returned to Constantinople and was entrusted with delivering the eulogy for the late queen Plakilla. In 394, Saint Gregory visited Constantinople again and attended a local council convened to address church matters in Arabia.
