The comedy "Anora," which tells the story of a passionate romance between a sex worker and the son of a Russian oligarch, won five awards at the 97th Academy Awards, reports Reuters.
Specifically, "Anora" received accolades for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing.
This film has previously faced criticism for "normalizing" the image of Russians and for the return of Russian actors to the global cultural scene, as it features Russian actors Mark Eidelshtein and Yuri Borisov, the latter of whom is listed in the "Peacemaker" database due to his support for Putin's policies.
"Ukraine is barely mentioned at this year's Oscars," writes Reuters correspondent Heather Timmons. Only the ceremony's host, Daryl Hannah, expressed her support on stage by saying "Glory to Ukraine," while host Conan O'Brien joked about "Anora's" victories, stating, "I think Americans are happy to see someone finally standing up to a powerful Russian."
