Maya Sandu's victory in the presidential elections in Moldova represents a triumph for democracy in Europe and euro-integration, as well as a strategic defeat for Putin, according to Alexander Merezhko, the head of the Ukrainian Parliament's Committee on Foreign Policy and Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation (Servant of the People faction).
“This is not just Sandu's victory; it is also a victory for democracy in Europe and euro-integration. At the same time, it is a strategic defeat for Putin, whose hybrid aggression against Moldova has failed to undermine the country's European aspirations,” Merezhko stated in a comment to the Interfax-Ukraine agency on Monday.
The parliament member noted that Sandu's victory is significant for Ukraine because Moldova, as a neighbor, “holds important geopolitical significance for us.”
“Now, Sandu and the democratic forces in Moldova face a new challenging task – to secure the victory of pro-European democratic forces in the parliamentary elections. And this will not be easy,” Merezhko emphasized.
According to the committee head, it is crucial that “over time, more and more citizens of Moldova support the country's euro-integration aspirations, especially the youth,” and “the election results make these changes inevitable.”
