If the new administration wants to maximize its chances for successful and swift negotiations, it must increase pressure on Moscow, writes the American think tank Atlantic Council in the article "Eight Big Ideas for the Second Trump Administration."
Experts at the Atlantic Council, including former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst, suggest that Trump "intends to reverse the ill-conceived measures taken by the Biden administration to restrict oil and gas production in the U.S. This should lower global oil and gas prices and reduce Russia's revenues from hydrocarbon sales."
Moreover, Trump's team may ramp up pressure on the Kremlin by implementing new sanctions that the Biden administration imposed on Moscow last week and should also outdo Biden's team by persuading their G7 partners to allow the transfer of all frozen Russian state assets to Ukraine.
Most importantly, according to Herbst, the new president needs to present his aid package.
"This could be a loan, but it must include modern weaponry – certainly longer-range army tactical missile systems (ATACMS) and F-16 fighter jets, but possibly even more – to make Putin understand that continuing his aggression will not lead to additional territorial gains. Such an approach could secure a lasting peace for which Trump could be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize," the Atlantic Council article states.
