The Security Service of Ukraine has apprehended a spotter for the Russian military intelligence, whose coordinates led to the deaths of three civilian residents of Sumy due to "Shahed" drones.

"The military counterintelligence of the Security Service has detained another Russian agent in Sumy. The individual is a 23-year-old local resident who was directing enemy fire in his region," the SSU statement said on Monday.

According to the investigation, it was based on the suspect's coordinates that the enemy attacked Sumy with kamikaze drones on October 22 of this year.

"As a result of the enemy strike on residential buildings in the city, three civilians were killed, including one child, a 9th-grade student from a local school," the Ukrainian special service clarified.

According to the SSU, in addition to directing enemy drones at the city's civilian infrastructure, the agent was also scouting the geolocation of the Defense Forces. To gather intelligence, he traveled around the Sumy area and nearby regions in his personal vehicle, covertly recording necessary objects.

It has been established that the agent was in direct contact with a staff officer from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the aggressor state (more commonly known as the GRU). They communicated through an anonymous chat in a messenger, where the suspect sent videos of potential targets along with coordinates and detailed descriptions of the objects.

The military counterintelligence of the SSU caught the perpetrator red-handed while he was carrying out an enemy task near military installations.

According to the investigation, the Russian military intelligence remotely recruited the suspect in the fall of this year when he was actively posting in Russian Telegram channels that anticipated the capture of Sumy region.

During the searches, the authorities seized a phone and a laptop from the detainee containing evidence of communication with the occupiers.

SSU investigators have informed the agent of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed under martial law). The perpetrator is currently in custody.
