U.S. President Donald Trump signed an order on Monday to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement – the text has been published on the White House website.
"The United States Ambassador to the United Nations shall immediately submit an official written notification of the United States' withdrawal from the Paris Agreement in accordance with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change… The United States will consider that its withdrawal from the Agreement and any related obligations take effect immediately upon receipt of this notification," the order states.
In the agreement to reduce emissions, nearly 200 countries committed to keeping global warming below two degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels and, if possible, below 1.5 degrees.
Trump exited the agreement during his first term, and one of Biden's first actions as president was to reinstate it. On Monday, Trump announced he would withdraw from the agreement again, which he labeled "one-sided."
In his inaugural address, Trump promised to declare a "national energy emergency" and streamline the processes for obtaining environmental permits and assessments, which, according to his administration, "impose an excessive burden on energy production and use."
His statements came despite the fact that the U.S. is producing more oil than any other country in human history.
