President Donald Trump signed an order on Monday to temporarily suspend all U.S. foreign aid programs for 90 days pending a review to determine if they align with his policy objectives, reports the White House website.
"All heads of departments and agencies responsible for U.S. foreign aid programs must immediately halt new commitments and disbursements of development assistance to foreign governments, non-governmental organizations, international organizations, and contractors providing such aid, until the analysis of these programs for their effectiveness and alignment with U.S. foreign policy is completed, which must be conducted within 90 days from the date of this order," the document states.
It remains unclear how much aid is affected by the order, as funding for many programs has already been appropriated by Congress and must be spent if it has not already been utilized.
