After the airstrike by Russian forces on an orphanage in the city of Sudzha, Kursk region (Russia), Ukrainian soldiers located within Russian territory rescued 84 civilians from the rubble, four of whom were severely injured, and another four people died, reported the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Saturday evening, February 1.
"Sudzha. As of 22:00, the work to clear the debris and assist the affected civilian population continues. Military personnel from the military commandant's office on Russian territory are still present at the site. During the debris clearing operations, medical assistance was provided to 84 civilians, whose health conditions are stable; 4 are in serious condition, and another 4 people have died," the statement published on the Telegram channel says.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine noted that all those in need of additional medical assistance are being promptly evacuated to medical facilities within Ukraine.
As reported, Russian forces struck the boarding school in Sudzha, where elderly individuals were among those trapped; 95 people were left under the rubble. "Sounds of moans and cries can be heard from beneath the debris. I remind you that most of these individuals are elderly and bedridden. Search and rescue operations are currently underway by the military commandant's office," reported press officer Alexey Dmitrashkovsky from the temporary military commandant's office in Russian territory.
The Russian side was aware that the boarding school in the city of Sudzha, Kursk region housed local residents, including women and children, all of whom were civilians; nevertheless, Russian forces still carried out the strike, as reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Saturday evening.
