The proposed agreement from the USA regarding access to Ukraine's natural resources involves Washington's control over mineral and oil-gas resources, ports, and other infrastructure. This information comes from UNN citing the publication The Telegraph.
Details
The British publication claims to have accessed the draft agreement put forth by the US presidential administration.
The document reveals that Donald Trump's demands extend far beyond mere US control over Ukraine's vital minerals, encompassing everything from ports and infrastructure to oil and gas.
The agreement also stipulates that for all future licenses, the USA will have preferential purchasing rights for minerals suitable for export.
The publication notes that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky himself proposed the idea of granting the USA access to Ukrainian resources.
The Ukrainian president, as the publication suggests, believed that if American companies began operations in Ukraine, it would deter a potential Russian attack, given that some mineral deposits are located near the front line.
"Zelensky likely did not expect to encounter terms typically applied to aggressor states that have been defeated in war. These conditions are harsher than the financial sanctions imposed on Germany and Japan after their defeat in 1945. Had the project been accepted, Trump's demands would have constituted a larger share of Ukraine's GDP than the reparations imposed on Germany under the Versailles Treaty," The Telegraph concluded.
Reminder
The President of Ukraine refused to sign the document transferring 50% of Ukraine's mineral resources to the USA due to a lack of security guarantees. Zelensky emphasized the necessity of clear security assurances in the future agreement.
